New record low for radio listening

19.08.2025 - RADIONYTT.NO - Kyrre Dahl

Deplorable figures are being reported for radio listening this summer. Never before has listening been measured so low in Norway.

Total listening dropped below 50% in July, and week 29 set a new record low for radio listening. Only 46.8% listened to the radio daily that week, the previous record low was from week 29, 2018 with 48.2%. This is the lowest weekly figure measured through the PPM measurements conducted by Nielsen.

There was a broad decline in July 2025 compared to July 2024, but NRK is the relative winner with improved market share and because MP3 is the only channel to go up slightly.

In July, a total of 49% of the Norwegian population listened to the radio daily. This is down from 52.1% in the same period last year.

The state broadcaster NRK is the largest radio player with a reach of 32.9% and a market share of 70.3%. P4-gruppen (Viaplay) and Bauer Norway has a reach of 19.0 and 10.9 respectively.

NRK P1 is, as always, the number one radio station in Norway with a daily reach of 20,6 % in july. P1 is especially popular in summer and is more than twice the size of number 2: P4 (main channel) at 9,6 % daily reach.

NRK P2 and NRK P1+ is number 3 and 4 on the list and Bauer holds the fifth place with its main channel Radio Norge, but with only a reach of 3,4 %. On the other hand Bauer has several stations not far behind.

Interestingly, NRKs youth channel is now almost wiped out, with only 2 % daily reach in july 2025, compared to 2,9 % in july 2024. The spinoff music channel mP3 is now much more popular at 3,1 %, and the only station to have more listeners in 2025 than in 2024.
